Indonesia, the country of the eternal smile, has been disturbed in the last few years by terrorist attacks of Muslim fundamentalists. The confusion in the country is an inspiration source for many Indonesian artists. In Promised Paradise we follow the troubadour-puppeteer Agus who criticizes the turbulence in his country in his performances. After another bombing in Jakarta, Agus decides to go searching for answers. To get these answers he goes to Bali and confronts himself with the "brain" behind the suicide bombing of the discotheque in Bali, Imam Samudra, who is in prison awaiting his execution. He not only interviews the still living terrorist in prison, but with the help of Master Leo, a paranormal, he also communicates with one of the dead suicide terrorists.
Leonard Retel HELMRICH is a Dutch filmmaker of Indonesian origin. Graduated from the Netherlands Film Academy in Amsterdam, Helmrich has directed several award-winning documentaries in his homeland of Indonesia. Having developed a special shooting method called “ single shot cinema,” he gives workshops all over the world.
