Jean Genet (1910-1986) was a prominent and controversial French novelist, playwright, poet, essayist, and political activist. A notorious figure on the mid-20th century literary scene, Genet was well regarded by some and reviled by others for his obsessive and passionate portraits of the love that blossomed in the darkest of places. Bravely pioneering queer literature when the very notion would get a writer arrested rather than earn him plaudits, his florid prose took readers through society's underbelly, finding romance and tragedy in prisons, seaside hovels, and the servant's quarters in supposedly respectable homes. His novels and plays alike broke boundaries, and his work became a rich mine for many a filmmaker.
His major works include the novels Querelle of Brest, The Thief's Journal, and Our Lady of the Flowers, and the plays The Balcony, The Blacks, The Maids and The Screens.
Antoine Bourseiller's spring 1981 interview with Genet provides a framework for reviewing many of the pivotal events in the artist's life, from his “childhood of crime”, to his travels across Europe (often, but not always, one step ahead of the law), to his experiences in prison, to the two great loves of his life, both of whom died tragically young. Conspicuously absent from this short list is Lucien Sénémaud, who played the younger prisoner in Un chant d’amour, and with whom Genet spent many years until Sénémaud left him to get married.
Genet talks briefly about his friendship with the great Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti – the only man Genet admires – who is shown working in his studio.
The film manages to compress a great deal of essential material into less than an hour, but its greatest value is giving us an opportunity to see and hear Genet talk about himself.
