The hero is a laconic loser, a man who stops cars by throwing sharp objects onto the highway just so he'll have someone to talk to. He lives in a trailer home in the desert and dreams of relocating to Reno. But before he can reach that neon paradise, he must do something about the fact that his wife is flagrantly pursuing an affair with an auto mechanic.
